The Type 64 Silenced Pistol is a Chinese integrally suppressed semi-automatic pistol chambered in a proprietary 7.65×17mm rimless cartridge related to .32 ACP. It was designed specifically for low-signature use, combining an internal suppressor with controls that can reduce action noise. The Type 64 is best known for its unusually quiet report and its ability to switch between self-loading operation and manual single-shot firing.

HISTORY

China developed the Type 64 in the early 1960s as a purpose-built suppressed sidearm for specialized military and security users, rather than adapting an existing service pistol with a detachable suppressor. Introduced in the mid-1960s, it uses a compact, mechanically distinctive action that allows the shooter to select normal blowback cycling or a locked/manual mode that prevents the slide from moving on firing, minimizing noise from the pistol’s operation. The integral suppressor is built into the weapon’s structure, creating a bulky forward profile but making the system ready for use without extra attachments.

The Type 64 was later followed by newer Chinese suppressed pistols, but it remained a niche weapon intended for covert tasks at very short ranges. It is documented as having been used during the Vietnam War in limited numbers, where a suppressed handgun would be most useful for sentry removal and other clandestine close-quarters actions. Its specialized ammunition and unconventional mechanism kept it from becoming a general-issue sidearm, but it remains one of the most recognizable dedicated suppressed pistols of the Cold War era.
