The PM md. 63 (Pistol Mitralieră model 1963) is a Romanian 7.62×39mm assault rifle based on the Soviet AKM. It is best known for its distinctive wooden front grip integrated into the lower handguard (often called the “dong” grip on later production/export rifles), intended to improve control during automatic fire.
HISTORY
In the early 1960s, the Romanian Army still fielded large numbers of older submachine guns (such as the PPSh-41 and Oriţa) alongside imported AK-47 rifles. As the Soviet Union encouraged Warsaw Pact members to develop domestic production of 7.62×39mm assault rifles, Romania developed its own AKM-pattern rifle family. The resulting **Pistol Mitralieră model 1963 (PM md. 63)** was an AKM derivative produced domestically and became Romania’s standard infantry rifle for the era.
A major identifying feature on many PM md. 63 rifles is the added forward-pointing wooden front grip molded into the lower handguard, intended to help manage muzzle climb in full-auto fire. Romania also produced an underfolding-stock version designated **Pistol Mitralieră model 1965 (PM md. 65)**. On the md. 65, the front grip is canted/repositioned so the underfolding stock can fully retract without interference.
