M34 White Phosphorus Grenade is a U.S. hand-and-rifle grenade filled with white phosphorus (WP), used for smoke, signaling/marking, and incendiary effects. It is a bursting-type grenade that scatters burning WP particles and can also produce casualties at close ranges. It is best known for Vietnam-era use and for being throwable by hand or launchable from a rifle grenade adapter.

HISTORY

The M34 entered U.S. service in the post–World War II period as a successor to earlier WP grenades, providing a standardized bursting WP munition that could be used for screening, target marking, and incendiary missions. It uses an M206A2 detonating fuze with a short delay and a steel body filled with roughly 15 ounces of WP; when it bursts, it disperses burning WP and fragments, and the WP burns for roughly about a minute under typical conditions.

The M34 was designed to be employed either as a hand grenade or projected from a rifle using an M1A1/M1A2 grenade projection adapter, which helped extend its delivery beyond normal throwing distance. U.S. Army guidance emphasized that burning WP particles can be hazardous to friendly troops within the burst area, making cover and careful employment essential when using it as smoke or an incendiary/casualty-producing grenade.
