History

The First Battle of Sài Gòn began on 31 January 1968 as part of the wider Tet Offensive. During the opening phase of the offensive, Viet Cong and North Vietnamese forces launched coordinated attacks across South Vietnam, with Sài Gòn as one of their main targets. In the capital, fighting broke out at multiple key locations, including the U.S. Embassy, the National Broadcasting Station, and Tan Son Nhut Air Base.

Although Communist forces briefly penetrated parts of the city and achieved a major psychological shock, they failed to hold Sài Gòn or trigger the general uprising they had hoped for. South Vietnamese and U.S. forces regained control after intense urban fighting, and the battle became one of the most famous actions of the Tet Offensive because it showed that even the South Vietnamese capital was vulnerable to sudden attack.
