			'''XM148''' is an early U.S. 40×46mm low-velocity underbarrel grenade launcher developed by Colt for mounting to the M16-family rifle. It is a single-shot, sliding-breech launcher intended to give riflemen an integral 40mm capability without carrying a separate [[M79]]. It is best known as a Vietnam-era prototype/early-service launcher that was quickly overshadowed by the simpler and more durable [[M203]].

			==HISTORY==
			Colt developed the XM148 in the mid-1960s as an underbarrel launcher for 40×46mm grenades, and it was procured for field evaluation and limited issue during the Vietnam War. The launcher used its own trigger mechanism and mounting system, and it offered riflemen a way to switch between standard rifle fire and 40mm grenades without changing weapons. It reached Vietnam and saw operational use, including with units that valued compact, multi-role equipment.

			Field experience reported in period accounts and later technical histories found the XM148 to be relatively complex and maintenance-sensitive, with durability and handling complaints (including snagging and component issues) that limited confidence in the system. Because of these problems, it was withdrawn from broader use and the underbarrel concept continued in the more straightforward M203 program, which became the long-term U.S. standard.
